Surah Al-Bayyinah

The Clear Proof

البينة
8 ayahs Revealed in Madinah Translation: Saheeh International

About Surah Al-Bayyinah

One of the shorter Madinan surahs, eight ayahs. It opens on those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists, who were not going to be parted from their position until clear evidence reached them (98:1). Al-bayyinah is that clear evidence, and the surah identifies it in the very next lines as a Messenger reciting purified scriptures containing correct rulings (98:2, 98:3).

The argument that follows is worth reading slowly: division among those given the Scripture came after the clarity arrived, not before it (98:4). Then a compact statement of what was ever asked of them, to worship God sincerely, inclining to truth, to establish prayer and to give zakah, described as the correct religion (98:5). It ends with two verdicts set side by side, the worst of creatures and the best of creatures (98:6, 98:7), and a final promise of gardens with rivers running beneath them, God pleased with them and they with Him (98:8). Bukhari and Muslim both report that the Prophet, peace be upon him, told Ubayy ibn Kab that God had commanded him to recite this surah to him, and that Ubayy wept.

Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence –

98:2

A Messenger from Allāh, reciting purified scriptures

98:3

Within which are correct writings [i.e., rulings and laws].

98:4

Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence.

98:5

And they were not commanded except to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct religion.

98:6

Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.

98:7

Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures.

98:8

Their reward with their Lord will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allāh being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.
