By the racers, panting,
The Courser
The opening five ayahs describe horses in a raid: racing and panting, striking sparks from the ground, charging at dawn, throwing up dust, driving into the middle of a gathering (100:1 to 100:5). Al-Adiyat means those that run, and the surah takes its name from that first word. Makkan, eleven ayahs, and the only surah that opens on the sound of cavalry.
The noise stops as suddenly as it started. Man is ungrateful to his Lord, and he is himself a witness to that (100:6, 100:7), and his love of wealth is intense (100:8). The closing question asks whether he knows what happens when the contents of the graves are scattered and what is held in the chests is brought out, and that his Lord on that Day is fully aware of them (100:9, 100:10, 100:11). The whole movement, from a charge across open ground to the inside of a person's chest, takes eleven short lines.
By the racers, panting,
And the producers of sparks [when] striking
And the chargers at dawn,
Stirring up thereby [clouds of] dust,
Arriving thereby in the center collectively,
Indeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.
And indeed, he is to that a witness.
And indeed he is, in love of wealth, intense.
But does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered
And that within the breasts is obtained,
Indeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is [fully] Aware.
