About Surah An-Nasr

Three Madinan ayahs about the moment the long struggle ended. The surah describes the help of God arriving together with the conquest and people entering the religion in crowds, and it is widely reported to be the last complete surah revealed. What is striking is that the companions did not hear it as congratulation.

Sahih al-Bukhari records that Umar asked the senior veterans of Badr what they made of it, and Ibn Abbas answered that it was the Prophet's own term being announced to him, peace be upon him. The work was complete, so the worker was being called. Umar told him he knew nothing of it except that. The wording carries the reading. When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest (110:1), and you see people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes (110:2), the instruction given is not to celebrate but to glorify your Lord with praise and ask His forgiveness (110:3). Success is met with istighfar, and that is the whole of the response the surah asks for.

When the victory of Allāh has come and the conquest,

110:2

And you see the people entering into the religion of Allāh in multitudes,

110:3

Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of Repentance.
