Woe to every scorner and mocker
The Traducer
Humazah describes a person who runs others down: by gesture, by mimicry, by the remark made sideways. It is paired in the opening ayah with lumazah, a fault finder, and the surah begins by pronouncing woe on him (104:1). No name is given and no incident is described. The description is left open so that it fits whoever it fits, which is worth noticing in a Makkan surah, since several of its neighbours answer particular opponents.
What follows ties the tongue to the purse. The man gathers wealth and counts it over (104:2) and imagines it has made him permanent (104:3). Contempt for people and confidence in money turn out to be the same posture from two angles. The reply is al-Hutamah, the Crusher (104:4), named and then queried in the Quran's usual manner (104:5) before being described as a fire of Allah that rises over the hearts (104:6 to 104:7), reaching the organ that did the despising. The last two ayahs close it over its inhabitants in outstretched columns (104:8 to 104:9). A man who spent his life enclosing things is finally enclosed by one.
Woe to every scorner and mocker
Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.
And what can make you know what is the Crusher?
It is the fire of Allāh, [eternally] fueled,
Which mounts directed at the hearts.
Indeed, it [i.e., Hellfire] will be closed down upon them
In extended columns.
