88:1
هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِیْثُ الْغَاشِیَةِ ۟ؕ
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?

About Surah Al-Ghashiyah
The name comes from the opening question: has the report of the Overwhelming reached you (88:1). Al-Ghashiyah is a name for the Day of Judgement, the event that covers and overwhelms everything. This is a Makkan surah of twenty-six ayahs, and its shape is simple. Two portraits of people on that Day, then an argument built entirely out of things anyone in Arabia could see for themselves.
The first faces are humbled, working and exhausted, given drink from a boiling spring and food from a thorny plant that neither nourishes nor satisfies hunger (88:2 to 88:7). The second show pleasure, content with their effort, in a high garden where no unsuitable speech is heard, with a flowing spring, raised couches, cups set out, cushions in rows and carpets spread (88:8 to 88:16). Then the surah turns outward and asks four questions about ordinary sights: the camel and how it is made, the sky and how it is raised, the mountains and how they are set, the earth and how it is spread (88:17, 88:18, 88:19, 88:20). After that comes a limit that is easy to miss. The Prophet is told he is only a reminder, not a controller over people (88:21, 88:22). Their return and their reckoning are not his work but God's (88:25, 88:26).
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
88:2
وُجُوْهٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,
88:3
عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ
Working [hard] and exhausted.
88:4
تَصْلٰی نَارًا حَامِیَةً
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.
88:5
تُسْقٰی مِنْ عَیْنٍ اٰنِیَةٍ ۟ؕ
They will be given drink from a boiling spring.
88:6
لَیْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ اِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِیْعٍ
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant
88:7
لَّا یُسْمِنُ وَلَا یُغْنِیْ مِنْ جُوْعٍ ۟ؕ
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.
88:8
وُجُوْهٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.
88:9
لِّسَعْیِهَا رَاضِیَةٌ
With their effort [they are] satisfied
88:10
فِیْ جَنَّةٍ عَالِیَةٍ
In an elevated garden,
88:11
لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِیْهَا لَاغِیَةً ۟ؕ
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.
88:12
فِیْهَا عَیْنٌ جَارِیَةٌ
Within it is a flowing spring.
88:13
فِیْهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوْعَةٌ
Within it are couches raised high
88:14
وَّاَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوْعَةٌ
And cups put in place
88:15
وَّنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوْفَةٌ
And cushions lined up
88:16
وَّزَرَابِیُّ مَبْثُوْثَةٌ ۟ؕ
And carpets spread around.
88:17
اَفَلَا یَنْظُرُوْنَ اِلَی الْاِبِلِ كَیْفَ خُلِقَتْ
Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?
88:18
وَاِلَی السَّمَآءِ كَیْفَ رُفِعَتْ
And at the sky - how it is raised?
88:19
وَاِلَی الْجِبَالِ كَیْفَ نُصِبَتْ
And at the mountains - how they are erected?
88:20
وَاِلَی الْاَرْضِ كَیْفَ سُطِحَتْ
And at the earth - how it is spread out?
88:21
فَذَكِّرْ ؕ۫ اِنَّمَاۤ اَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌ ۟ؕ
So remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.
88:22
لَسْتَ عَلَیْهِمْ بِمُصَۜیْطِرٍ
You are not over them a controller.
88:23
اِلَّا مَنْ تَوَلّٰی وَكَفَرَ
However, he who turns away and disbelieves –
88:24
فَیُعَذِّبُهُ اللّٰهُ الْعَذَابَ الْاَكْبَرَ ۟ؕ
Then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.
88:25
اِنَّ اِلَیْنَاۤ اِیَابَهُمْ
Indeed, to Us is their return.
88:26
ثُمَّ اِنَّ عَلَیْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ
Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
