The Small kindnesses

About Surah Al-Ma'un

Ma'un is the small ordinary help neighbours pass between one another, the borrowed pot or bucket, the thing nobody keeps accounts of. It is the last word of the surah and gives it its name. The subject is the connection between believing in a day of reckoning and how a person behaves when no one is keeping score, which is why the surah spends no time on argument and all of it on conduct.

It opens as a question about the one who denies the Recompense (107:1), then answers by describing behaviour rather than belief: he shoves the orphan aside (107:2) and does not encourage anyone to feed the poor (107:3). Halfway through, the target changes. Woe now falls on people who pray (107:4), those heedless of the prayer they are performing (107:5), who do it to be seen (107:6) and then refuse the loan of a household item (107:7). Prayer is not what is being criticised. Prayer emptied of what it was meant to produce is. The indictment runs from a pushed away orphan down to a withheld bucket, and the descent in scale is the point.

Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?

107:2

For that is the one who drives away the orphan

107:3

And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.

107:4

So woe to those who pray

107:5

[But] who are heedless of their prayer -

107:6

Those who make show [of their deeds]

107:7

And withhold [simple] assistance.
