Say, "O disbelievers,
The Disbelievers
Six ayahs that settle a question instead of debating it. Al-Kafirun is Makkan and reads like the closing line of a negotiation, refusing any arrangement in which two forms of worship are blended or traded off against each other. It begins with the command Say, followed by direct address to those who reject faith (109:1), which makes the whole thing a script the Prophet, peace be upon him, was handed rather than a position he worked out.
The body is four parallel statements (109:2 to 109:5), alternating between what he does not worship and what they do not worship, and moving from the present into the future so that the refusal covers both now and later. The repetition is the argument. Then the final line, for you is your religion and for me is mine (109:6), which states that the two cannot be merged rather than that it makes no difference which is true. A hadith in Muslim records that the Prophet used to recite this surah together with Al-Ikhlas in the two short rak'ahs before the dawn prayer.
Say, "O disbelievers,
I do not worship what you worship.
Nor are you worshippers of what I worship.
Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship.
Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.
For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."
