Surah Ad-Duhaa

The Morning Hours

11 ayahs Revealed in Makkah Translation: Saheeh International

About Surah Ad-Duhaa

This is one of the few short surahs with an occasion of revelation that is very widely reported. Revelation paused for a time, and Bukhari records that a woman in Makkah taunted the Prophet, peace be upon him, saying she thought his devil had left him. The surah came as the answer. Its name is the opening oath, by the morning brightness, set against the night when it covers over (93:1, 93:2). Makkan, eleven ayahs.

The reply is immediate: your Lord has not taken leave of you, nor has He detested you (93:3), and what lies ahead is better than what has gone, and He will give until you are satisfied (93:4, 93:5). Then three facts from his own life, put as questions: He found you an orphan and sheltered you, found you lost and guided you, found you poor and made you self-sufficient (93:6, 93:7, 93:8). Three instructions follow that answer them one by one: do not oppress the orphan, do not turn away the one who asks, and speak about your Lord's favour (93:9, 93:10, 93:11). The symmetry is the argument. What a person was given is the measure of what he now owes.

93:1

By the morning brightness

And [by] the night when it covers with darkness,

Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muḥammad], nor has He detested [you].

93:4

And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life].

93:5

And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.

93:6

Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge?

And He found you lost and guided [you],

93:8

And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient.

93:9

So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him].

And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him].

But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it].
