92:1
وَالَّیْلِ اِذَا یَغْشٰی
By the night when it covers

About Surah Al-Layl
Night, day, and the creation of male and female are the three things sworn by at the start (92:1, 92:2, 92:3), and they lead to one short statement: your efforts are diverse (92:4). The surah is Makkan, and its twenty-one ayahs do little except work that one line out. Everything after the opening sorts people into two kinds, and the dividing line is not belief alone but what a person does with money once he has it.
One man gives, is conscious of God and believes in the best reward, and is eased toward ease (92:5, 92:6, 92:7). The other withholds, considers himself free of need, denies that same reward, and is eased toward difficulty (92:8, 92:9, 92:10). The two descriptions are built on an identical frame, verb for verb, which is what makes the contrast land. A question follows about what his wealth will do for him when he falls (92:11), then a statement that guidance is God's to give and that both the Hereafter and this first life belong to Him (92:12, 92:13). The closing lines describe the one who will be kept far from the Fire: he gives from his wealth to purify himself, not to repay anyone's favour, seeking only the face of his Lord, and he will be satisfied (92:17 to 92:21).
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
92:2
وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا تَجَلّٰی
And [by] the day when it appears
92:3
وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْاُ
And [by] He who created the male and female,
92:4
اِنَّ سَعْیَكُمْ لَشَتّٰی ۟ؕ
Indeed, your efforts are diverse.
92:5
فَاَمَّا مَنْ اَعْطٰی وَاتَّقٰی
As for he who gives and fears Allāh
92:6
وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنٰی
And believes in the best [reward].
92:7
فَسَنُیَسِّرُهٗ لِلْیُسْرٰی ۟ؕ
We will ease him toward ease.
92:8
وَاَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنٰی
But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
92:9
وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنٰی
And denies the best [reward],
92:10
فَسَنُیَسِّرُهٗ لِلْعُسْرٰی ۟ؕ
We will ease him toward difficulty.
92:11
وَمَا یُغْنِیْ عَنْهُ مَالُهٗۤ اِذَا تَرَدّٰی ۟ؕ
And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?
92:12
اِنَّ عَلَیْنَا لَلْهُدٰی ۟ؗۖ
Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.
92:13
وَاِنَّ لَنَا لَلْاٰخِرَةَ وَالْاُوْلٰی
And indeed, to us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
92:14
فَاَنْذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظّٰی
So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.
92:15
لَا یَصْلٰىهَاۤ اِلَّا الْاَشْقَی
None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one
92:16
الَّذِیْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلّٰی ۟ؕ
Who had denied and turned away.
92:17
وَسَیُجَنَّبُهَا الْاَتْقَی
But the righteous one will avoid it –
92:18
الَّذِیْ یُؤْتِیْ مَالَهٗ یَتَزَكّٰی
[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself
92:19
وَمَا لِاَحَدٍ عِنْدَهٗ مِنْ نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزٰۤی
And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded –
92:20
اِلَّا ابْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْاَعْلٰی
But only seeking the face [i.e., acceptance] of his Lord, Most High.
92:21
وَلَسَوْفَ یَرْضٰی
And he is going to be satisfied.
