77:1
وَالْمُرْسَلٰتِ عُرْفًا
By those [winds] sent forth in gusts

About Surah Al-Mursalat
The title comes from the opening oath, by those sent forth in gusts, understood as winds and then as angels carrying commands. Ibn Mas'ud's account in Bukhari and Muslim places its revelation while the Prophet, peace be upon him, was with his companions in a cave at Mina. The surah is about one claim, stated flatly at 77:7: what you are promised is going to happen. Everything else is arranged around that sentence, and the arrangement is what a reader notices first, because the same line returns again and again like a bell.
That line is "Woe, that Day, to the deniers", and it occurs ten times, first at 77:15 and last at 77:49. Between the repetitions the argument moves in short blocks. Earlier peoples were destroyed and later ones will follow (77:16, 77:17). You were made from a fluid held in a secure lodging for a set term (77:20 to 77:22). The earth holds the living and the dead, with mountains set on it and fresh water given to drink (77:25 to 77:27). Then the punishment is drawn with strange precision: a shade of smoke in three columns that neither cools nor shields, throwing sparks like a fortress, yellow as camels (77:30 to 77:33). Against this the righteous sit among shades and springs with fruit they choose (77:41, 77:42). The final ayah asks what statement they will believe in after this one.
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
77:2
فَالْعٰصِفٰتِ عَصْفًا
And the winds that blow violently
77:3
وَّالنّٰشِرٰتِ نَشْرًا
And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]
77:4
فَالْفٰرِقٰتِ فَرْقًا
And those [angels] who bring criterion
77:5
فَالْمُلْقِیٰتِ ذِكْرًا
And those [angels] who deliver a message
77:6
عُذْرًا اَوْ نُذْرًا
As justification or warning,
77:7
اِنَّمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ لَوَاقِعٌ ۟ؕ
Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.
77:8
فَاِذَا النُّجُوْمُ طُمِسَتْ
So when the stars are obliterated
77:9
وَاِذَا السَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتْ
And when the heaven is opened
77:10
وَاِذَا الْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْ
And when the mountains are blown away
77:11
وَاِذَا الرُّسُلُ اُقِّتَتْ ۟ؕ
And when the messengers' time has come...
77:12
لِاَیِّ یَوْمٍ اُجِّلَتْ ۟ؕ
For what Day was it postponed?
77:13
لِیَوْمِ الْفَصْلِ
For the Day of Judgement.
77:14
وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا یَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ ۟ؕ
And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?
77:15
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:16
اَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ ۟ؕ
Did We not destroy the former peoples?
77:17
ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ الْاٰخِرِیْنَ
Then We will follow them with the later ones.
77:18
كَذٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِیْنَ
Thus do We deal with the criminals.
77:19
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:20
اَلَمْ نَخْلُقْكُّمْ مِّنْ مَّآءٍ مَّهِیْنٍ
Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?
77:21
فَجَعَلْنٰهُ فِیْ قَرَارٍ مَّكِیْنٍ
And We placed it in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb]
77:22
اِلٰی قَدَرٍ مَّعْلُوْمٍ
For a known extent.
77:23
فَقَدَرْنَا ۖۗ فَنِعْمَ الْقٰدِرُوْنَ
And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.
77:24
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:25
اَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْاَرْضَ كِفَاتًا
Have We not made the earth a container
77:26
اَحْیَآءً وَّاَمْوَاتًا
Of the living and the dead?
77:27
وَّجَعَلْنَا فِیْهَا رَوَاسِیَ شٰمِخٰتٍ وَّاَسْقَیْنٰكُمْ مَّآءً فُرَاتًا ۟ؕ
And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.
77:28
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:29
اِنْطَلِقُوْۤا اِلٰی مَا كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوْنَ
[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.
77:30
اِنْطَلِقُوْۤا اِلٰی ظِلٍّ ذِیْ ثَلٰثِ شُعَبٍ
Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns
77:31
لَّا ظَلِیْلٍ وَّلَا یُغْنِیْ مِنَ اللَّهَبِ ۟ؕ
[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."
77:32
اِنَّهَا تَرْمِیْ بِشَرَرٍ كَالْقَصْرِ
Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,
77:33
كَاَنَّهٗ جِمٰلَتٌ صُفْرٌ ۟ؕ
As if they were yellowish [black] camels.
77:34
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:35
هٰذَا یَوْمُ لَا یَنْطِقُوْنَ
This is a Day they will not speak,
77:36
وَلَا یُؤْذَنُ لَهُمْ فَیَعْتَذِرُوْنَ
Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse.
77:37
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:38
هٰذَا یَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ ۚ جَمَعْنٰكُمْ وَالْاَوَّلِیْنَ
This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.
77:39
فَاِنْ كَانَ لَكُمْ كَیْدٌ فَكِیْدُوْنِ
So if you have a plan, then plan against Me.
77:40
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:41
اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ فِیْ ظِلٰلٍ وَّعُیُوْنٍ
Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs
77:42
وَّفَوَاكِهَ مِمَّا یَشْتَهُوْنَ ۟ؕ
And fruits from whatever they desire,
77:43
كُلُوْا وَاشْرَبُوْا هَنِیْٓـًٔا بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ
[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
77:44
اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجْزِی الْمُحْسِنِیْنَ
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
77:45
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:46
كُلُوْا وَتَمَتَّعُوْا قَلِیْلًا اِنَّكُمْ مُّجْرِمُوْنَ
[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.
77:47
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:48
وَاِذَا قِیْلَ لَهُمُ ارْكَعُوْا لَا یَرْكَعُوْنَ
And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.
77:49
وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:50
فَبِاَیِّ حَدِیْثٍ بَعْدَهٗ یُؤْمِنُوْنَ
