Surah Al-Fatihah

The Opener

7 ayahs Revealed in Makkah Translation: Saheeh International

About Surah Al-Fatihah

Al-Fatihah means the Opener, and the name works on two levels. It opens the written Quran, and it is read at the start of every unit of prayer. Seven ayahs, revealed at Makkah. There is no story here, no legislation and no argument with opponents. What there is, is a request. Read it slowly and the voice turns partway through: the opening lines speak about God, and from 1:5 the servant addresses Him directly, saying that it is You we worship and You we ask for help.

The whole second half is one petition, for guidance to the straight path, and 1:7 describes that path by the people who walked it rather than by a list of rules: those God favoured, not those who earned anger, not those who went astray. The surah is also known as the seven oft repeated verses. A hadith in Bukhari records the Prophet, peace be upon him, telling Abu Sa'id ibn al-Mu'alla that it is the greatest surah of the Quran, and a hadith reported in both Bukhari and Muslim states that there is no prayer for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book. For most people learning to pray, these seven lines are the first thing memorised.

1:1

In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

1:2

[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds -

1:3

The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,

1:4

Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.

1:5

It is You we worship and You we ask for help.

1:6

Guide us to the straight path -

1:7

The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
