Surah Al-Qadr

The Power

القدر
5 ayahs Revealed in Makkah Translation: Saheeh International

About Surah Al-Qadr

Five ayahs about one night. The surah states that the Quran was sent down on Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree (97:1), asks what could make you know what that night is, and answers that it is better than a thousand months (97:2, 97:3). Qadr carries the senses of decree, measure and worth all at once, which is why English renderings of the name differ so much. Makkan, and placed in the last juz.

The angels and the Spirit descend through it by their Lord's permission with every matter, and it is peace until dawn breaks (97:4, 97:5). The text never says which night of the year it falls on. That comes from hadith instead. Bukhari and Muslim both record the instruction to look for it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, with the odd nights singled out, and both also record the promise that whoever stands in prayer on that night out of faith and seeking reward will have his previous sins forgiven. Those two reports are the reason mosques fill for the last ten nights every year.
