Surah At-Tin

The Fig

التين
8 ayahs Revealed in Makkah Translation: Saheeh International

About Surah At-Tin

Three oaths open it, and the first gives the surah its name: by the fig and the olive, by Mount Sinai, and by this secure city (95:1, 95:2, 95:3), the city being Makkah. Commentators have long read the three as pointing to lands connected with prophethood, while the fig and the olive are also taken plainly as the two fruits. Makkan, eight ayahs, and one of the shortest arguments about human worth anywhere in the Quran.

The statement it is built around is that man was created in the best of stature and is then returned to the lowest of the low, with an exception made for those who believe and do righteous deeds, whose reward is uninterrupted (95:4, 95:5, 95:6). It closes with two questions rather than a conclusion: what then makes you deny the Recompense, and is God not the most just of judges (95:7, 95:8). Bukhari records Bara ibn Azib saying he heard the Prophet, peace be upon him, recite this surah in the Isha prayer, and that he never heard anyone with a more beautiful voice.

95:1

By the fig and the olive

95:2

And [by] Mount Sinai

95:3

And [by] this secure city [i.e., Makkah],

95:4

We have certainly created man in the best of stature;

95:5

Then We return him to the lowest of the low,

95:6

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted.

95:7

So what yet causes you to deny the Recompense?

95:8

Is not Allāh the most just of judges?
