The Cleaving

About Surah Al-Infitar

Al-Infitar means the cleaving or splitting apart, and it comes from the opening line about the sky breaking open. This short Makkan surah shares its shape with the two around it: a run of when clauses followed by a single conclusion. Here there are four, the sky splitting, the stars scattering, the seas bursting their bounds and the graves turned out, and the conclusion at 82:5 is that a soul will know what it sent ahead and what it held back.

The heart of the surah is the question at 82:6, addressed to every human being: what has deceived you about your Lord, the Generous. The answer is left open, but the reminder that follows is pointed. He is the one who created you, proportioned you and balanced you, and shaped you into whatever form He willed (82:7, 82:8). Against that stands a flat denial of the Recompense. Then the record-keepers appear at 82:10 to 82:12, described as honourable and writing, and knowing what you do. The last lines separate the righteous, who are in pleasure, from the wicked, who burn on the Day of Recompense and are never absent from it. The surah closes by asking twice what that Day is, and answering that no soul will hold anything for another soul, because the command belongs entirely to God.

When the sky breaks apart

82:2

And when the stars fall, scattering,

82:3

And when the seas are erupted

82:4

And when the [contents of] graves are scattered [i.e., exposed],

82:5

A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back.

82:6

O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,

82:7

Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?

82:8

In whatever form He willed has He assembled you.

82:9

No! But you deny the Recompense.

82:10

And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers,

82:11

Noble and recording;

82:12

They know whatever you do.

82:13

Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure,

82:14

And indeed, the wicked will be in Hellfire.

82:15

They will [enter to] burn therein on the Day of Recompense,

82:16

And never therefrom will they be absent.

82:17

And what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?

82:18

Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?

82:19

It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing; and the command, that Day, is [entirely] with Allāh.
