About Surah Al-Falaq
Al-Falaq is the splitting of the dawn, the moment light breaks through the dark, and the surah is a request for shelter under the Lord of exactly that. It is the first of the pair known together as al-Mu'awwidhatayn, the two surahs of seeking refuge, which close the Quran. Both open with Say, I seek refuge, and this one is concerned with harm arriving from outside a person.
Four kinds of evil are named, narrowing as they go. The evil of what He created (113:2), which takes in everything without needing to list it. Then darkness when it settles in (113:3). Then those who blow on knots (113:4), understood as the practice of sorcery. Then the envier when he envies (113:5), which like the darkness before it is tied to a moment rather than left general, meaning not the envious man at large but the point at which envy is acted upon. Aisha reported, in Sahih al-Bukhari, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, would cup his hands each night, recite this surah along with Al-Ikhlas and An-Nas, blow into them, and pass them over as much of his body as he could reach.
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
113:2
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
From the evil of that which He created
113:3
وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ اِذَا وَقَبَ
And from the evil of darkness when it settles
113:4
وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفّٰثٰتِ فِی الْعُقَدِ
And from the evil of the blowers in knots
113:5
وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ اِذَا حَسَدَ
And from the evil of an envier when he envies."
